Fatoumatta Darboe, PhD

Postdoctoral Scholar

Fatoumatta grew up in The Gambia. She earned her undergraduate degree at The University of The Gambia and majored in Biology and Chemistry. Following graduation, her first lab position was in Katie Flanagan’s lab in MRC, The Gambia working on HIV and Malaria clinical trials.

She attended the Open University (UK) and the University of Cape Town for graduate school. At the Open University she completed her MPhil in infectious diseases studying the immune responses to delayed BCG vaccination. Upon completion she joined the South African Tuberculosis Vaccine Initiative at the University of Cape Town where she completed her PhD in 2018. She worked on transcriptomic signatures developed to predict TB disease and evaluated these people living with HIV. In addition, she worked on other biomarkers for TB disease such as cellular and protein markers.

When she is not in the lab, Fatoumatta can be found running, hiking, and cooking.
