Rafael Tiburcio, PhD

Postdoc

Rafa Tiburcio grew up in Salvador (Brazil) and attended Federal University of Bahia for his undergraduate degree in biological sciences. His first lab job was working on the role of dendritic cells in Leishmaniasis under Dr. Claudia Brodskyn’s supervision. During undergrad Rafa earned a scholarship to pursuit part of his undergrad studies at Memorial University of Newfoundland St. John`s, Canada). Following graduation, his first lab position was in Dr Brodskyn’s Lab doing his master studies on the biology of Antigen-presenting cells ( one of his great scientific passions).

Rafa attended Federal University of Bahia for graduate school and completed his degree in Experimental Pathology in Dr. Bruno Bezerril’s lab where he worked on the contributions of T cells in the pathogenesis of immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome in Tuberculosis patients coinfected with HIV-1. During this time, Rafa learned multiparametric flow cytometry, high dimensional data analysis and systems immunology tools. During grad school Rafa was awarded the best PhD ongoing project in his institution (2022), and almost had an overdose of caffeine.

When not in the lab, Rafa can be found at home doing watching documentaries and reading non-fiction books. Mostly recently, since his arrival in the Bay Area, Rafa’s finally venturing out of his comfort zone, and has been exploring the vibrant neighborhoods of San Francisco, going out for hikes, and occasionally to grab some drinks.
