Solima Sabeel, PhD

Postdoctoral Scholar

Solima grew up in Sudan, home to the world’s longest river and the father of African rivers, the Nile. She earned her undergraduate degree in Medical Microbiology from the University of Khartoum. Her first lab job was working on the prevalence of asymptomatic urinary tract infections in type-2 diabetic patients under Dr. Ameen.

Solima continued her academic journey at the University of Khartoum for graduate school, completing her MSc degree in Dr.Baha's lab. There, her focus was on the phenotypic and genotypic characteristics of multidrug-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolated from Sudanese patients.

Thereafter, she joined Guler’s lab as a PhD candidate at the University of Cape Town. Her research project was part of a randomized phase II clinical trial that aims to prevent recurrent tuberculosis infections through host-directed therapeutical drugs, mainly atorvastatin. Guler lab is part of the infectious disease group in International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) Cape Town component. Therefore, she actively participated in many ICGEB School Outreach Programme where she worked with young pupils to raise their interest in science.

When not in the lab, Solima can be found exploring the beauty of nature, hiking, listening to music, dancing and singing. By the way, she has a fabulous voice.
